“Variety is the spice of life”, a proverbial saying over 200 years old, is surely also relevant to reading texts for language learners; they should not all be written in the same style and with the same kind of content, but should include different genres such as mystery, adventure, crime, horror, ‘human interest’, factual and more. We will look at examples of this in recent Black Cat graded readers, and explore how different genres of language learner literature involve a variety of styles, plots and themes.
Students can be encouraged to respond to a reading text by writing something themselves, and we will suggest different genres of text that students themselves can produce to demonstrate their imaginative response to what they read.
